| About Me |
When people ask me about my work, I generally do not place myself in any category
(functional or nonfunctional). This tends to surprise some people. Of course, to support
myself I create what my customers want. Generally it is some type of functional ware
such as cups, bowls, or platters. Creating functional ware is quite rewarding. Knowing that the objects I have
created will in some way enrich people's everyday lives is a great feeling.
However, when I am not creating something for my customer, I am creating
sculptural vessels. Some people have referred to them as pillow pots.
I like to give them either a male or female feeling to them. I combine wheel throwing and handbuilding techniques
to create these vessels. Creating such vessels gives me more freedom to explore my creative energies.
For many years I was a potter strictly working on the wheel. After my first
trip to NCECA, my inner voice told me that I MUST handbuild. I have not
looked back since. Today I combine both wheel throwing and handbuilding, and I
have never been happier or more successful. The more experienced I become, the
more I become interested in surfaces. From subtle to dramatic, the surface
offers infinite possibilities. The process of creating just the right surface
for each piece is a challenge that I never get tired of trying to solve. I
often visualize the final piece in my head, and then my challenge is the
process the clay must go through to become a reality. | ||
